When to Use Mix and Match vs Fixed Bundle?
Choosing the right bundle type
In FoxSell Bundles Plus, the best bundle type depends on
How much choice you want shoppers to have?
How many variants/options your products have?
This page helps you decide between:
Fixed Bundle (pre-built bundle customers buy as-is)
Mix & Match (Build Your Own Bundle) (customers choose items from categories)
Quick comparison
Feature | Fixed Bundle | Mix & Match (Build Your Own Bundle) |
|---|---|---|
Customer experience | One pre-built bundle product | Shoppers pick items from categories |
Variants & options | Subject to Shopify product limits (options/variants) | Designed for large catalogs and many combinations |
Setup effort | Quickest to publish | Requires category setup + theme section for the bundle page |
Best for | “Buy these items together” | “Build your own bundle” |
If you’re deciding mainly because you’re hitting Shopify variant limits, start with Mix & Match. If you’re deciding mainly for a simple, fixed kit, start with Fixed Bundle.
When to use a Fixed Bundle
Use a Fixed Bundle when you want to sell a specific set of items together (a kit, set, or combo) and shoppers should not swap items.
Best fits
You’re selling a pre-defined set (example: “Skincare Essentials” includes cleanser + moisturizer + serum).
Your products have manageable variants (you’re unlikely to hit Shopify’s product option/variant limits).
You want the simplest setup in FoxSell.
What to expect in the UI
In FoxSell Bundles Plus, you typically create the bundle first, then finalize selling details in Shopify:
In FoxSell Bundles Plus, go to the Bundles list and click Create a new Bundle.
Select Fixed Bundle and choose the products you want included.
Then open the generated bundle product in Shopify Admin to set the price and status (for example, Active/Draft) as needed.
A Fixed Bundle requires at least 2 products.
Why Fixed Bundles can hit limits
Fixed Bundles create a native Shopify product for the bundle. That means Shopify product constraints apply (for example, the number of options and total variants). As you add more bundled items with variants, combinations can grow quickly.
If you’re bundling multiple products that each have their own “Color/Size/etc.” options, you can hit Shopify’s limits faster than expected. In those cases, Mix & Match is usually the safer choice.
When to use Mix & Match (Build Your Own Bundle)
Use Mix & Match (Build Your Own Bundle) when shoppers should choose items (and variants) themselves—typically by picking from one or more categories.
Best fits
You want a customizable bundle (example: “Pick any 3 snacks”).
Your catalog has many products and variants, and you don’t want to manage a huge combined variant grid.
You need flexible rules like “Pick 2 from Category A and 1 from Category B”.
What to expect in the UI
Mix & Match setup has two key parts: build the bundle in FoxSell and add the bundle UI to your theme.
In FoxSell Bundles Plus, go to Create Bundle and choose Mix & Match (Build Your Own Bundle).
Create your categories and add products to each category.
In the Shopify theme editor, add the app section “Mix and Match Add Ons” to the dedicated bundle product template used for your Mix & Match bundle page.
Mix & Match is the recommended approach when you need lots of possible combinations, because each selected item can keep its own variant selector without forcing you into one combined variant list.
Common scenarios (fast decision guide)
Choose Fixed Bundle.
In FoxSell Bundles Plus, go to Bundles → Create a new Bundle → Fixed Bundle, then set your final price and status in Shopify Admin.
Choose Mix & Match (Build Your Own Bundle).
Create categories in FoxSell, and make sure your theme includes the “Mix and Match Add Ons” app section on the bundle’s product template.
Choose Mix & Match.
Fixed Bundles can run into Shopify product option/variant limits as combinations multiply across items.
Use the “fixed experience” workaround with Mix & Match:
Create a Mix & Match (Build Your Own Bundle) bundle.
Configure categories so there’s effectively only one valid selection path for shoppers (the exact items/quantities you want).
If you don’t want shoppers changing quantities, turn off settings like Quantity as an option (when available in your bundle settings).
This approach is commonly used for “infinite variants” style setups, where you want a fixed outcome but can’t (or don’t want to) manage a massive combined variant list.
Consider Multi Variant Bundle.
In FoxSell Bundles Plus, go to Create Bundle and choose Multi Variant Bundle when you want the bundle itself to have a small set of variants (like Size) without offering full “pick anything” customization.
Where to create each bundle type
In your Shopify admin, open FoxSell Bundles Plus.
Go to the Bundles list and click Create a new Bundle (or use Create Bundle).
Select either Fixed Bundle or Mix & Match (Build Your Own Bundle) based on the decision guide above.
If your Mix & Match bundle doesn’t look right on the storefront, double-check your theme template includes the app section labeled “Mix and Match Add Ons” for the bundle product page.
